Thanks to a generous sponsorship by the Fred and Gladys Katen Family Trust, Jazz Outreach Initiative is able to send at least 20 of its highly qualified professional mentors and clinicians directly into local middle and high schools to work with their jazz bands who are preparing for spring festivals. Previously, JOI provided accomplished composer, trombonist, and UNLV faculty of the Division of Jazz and Commercial Music, Nathan Tanouye to Canarelli Middle School, directed by Marisa Davidson. Tanouye is a member of the JOI Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Outreach Initiative's professional big band.
The second school to be scheduled was on Friday March 11, 2022 at Liberty High School under the direction of Dr. Donald Malpass. Liberty received JOI's Las Vegas Youth Jazz Orchestra mentor and member of the JOI Jazz Orchestra, Prof. Dave Loeb. Loeb is a legendary pianist and composer and Director of the UNLV Division of Jazz and Commercial Music where his bands have won numerous Downbeat Magazine awards, performed and won awards at Monterrey Jazz Festival, Midwest Clinic, and this spring will compete as one of the nation's top 10 collegiate jazz bands at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Jack Rudin Competition in NYC.
