Friday May 13, Jazz Outreach Initiative's JOI Jazz Brass Quintet brought their highly rated "Buzzin in Brass" program to Eileen Brookman Elementary School, a Title 1 school in east Las Vegas. The program was paid for with deepest gratitude through a grant from The Smith Center and a generous contribution from JOI Jazz Alliance Volunteer, Mrs. Page Hawken. It was wonderful having Mrs. Hawken present to witness the enthusiasm exhibited by the students in attendance!
"Buzzin' in Brass" is one of JOI's first programs, an original concept carried over from co-founder and VP Education & Programming, Gary Cordell, and the late Walter Blanton. It features each member of the brass quintet introducing students to its unique qualities, history, and sounds and then introduces that instrument within an age appropriate recognizable song spotlighting that instrument. At the conclusion of the guided learning portion of the program, students are treated to a "test" to see if they recognize songs from favorite movies and TV shows featuring the brass family. "Buzzin in Brass" is exclusively available to local Title 1 schools.
The brass quintet members for this performance were Gary Cordell (Trumpet), Jorge Machain (Trumpet / Flugelhorn), Nathan Tanouye (Trombone), Casey Davis (French Horn), and Greg McCracken (Tuba).
