Jazz Outreach Initiative Co-Founder and head of all our education and programming, Gary Cordell, and his "Buzzin' in Brass" jazz quintet brought jazz education to hundreds of kids at Oran K. Gragson Elementary School thanks to the inimitable partnership JOI has with The Smith Center's Education & Outreach Division. Students learned about the history and sounds of each of the members of the brass family and heard music featuring each.
Funds from the partnership and individual donors ensure this outstanding educational outreach program is 100% free to exclusively Title I "at risk" elementary schools within CCSD. See below for more photos. This brings the count to nearly 5,000, the number of young people JOI will reach by the end of this semester towards its goal of nearly 10,000 by year end. The JOI Jazz Brass Quintet includes Gary as leader on trumpet, Larry Ransom (trumpet), Dr. Jessica Hawthorn (trombone), Alan Johnson (tuba), and Michael Manley (french horn).
Don't miss the nationally acclaimed Jazz Vegas Orchestra in its return to the beautiful Centennial Hills Park Amphitheater in another FREE "Concerts for the Community" event May 8th at 7pm! Lawn Chairs, Blankets, and the entire family welcome! Sponsored by Ward 6 Councilwoman Nancy Brune and the City of Las Vegas Parks & Recreation. Food and Beverage trucks will be available. (No outside food/bev allowed except water).
The "JVO" will also perform its regularly scheduled 1st Wednesdays series at Notoriety downtown on May 6th. These have become a favorite among our loyal fans and volunteers who come not only for the great cocktails but also as a fun "hang!"
"BUT WHAT ABOUT THE KIDS???" We've got you covered!! The Las Vegas Youth Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Messenger Combo will present its spring concert Sunday May 24th at 3pm! Come and be wowed by the passion and talent of these young musicians from across the Las Vegas valley who not only perform professional level charts but also direct their own arrangements and original music after learning composition skills from their regular weekly classes! It's FREE but with limited seating, tickets are required.
Then back to the Jazz Vegas Orchestra - If you were dazzled by the immense talent of this world-class big band when it welcomed legendary drummer Jeff Hamilton to the stage a few weeks ago, you'll quickly secure your seats at Myron's at The Smith Center when the JVO welcomes world-renowned trumpet master Wayne Bergeron on June 17th!
