Jazz Outreach Initiative Announces Partnership with College of Southern Nevada!

Donny Thompson, M.S., NPA

Jazz Outreach Initiative continues to expand its base of community partners with a new expansion! After more than a year of discussions and preparation, JOI has officially moved all of its education and youth performance programs to the College of Southern Nevada's East Cheyenne Campus each Sunday afternoon!

This strategic alliance with our friends in the CSN Department of Music, especially Fine Arts Department Chair, Robert Bonora and Director of Bands-Coordinator of Jazz, Dr. David Phy, will serve the entire community with outstanding projects such as the Las Vegas Youth Jazz Orchestra, along with expanded studies including a number of jazz combos, multiple bands of varying skill levels, jazz arranging and composition classes, recording sessions, Jazz Language with JOI, our "Jammin' With JOI" free summer program, and joint concerts and free school and "Concerts for the Community" programs such as Buzzin' in Brass and Jazz for Young People using the outstanding theaters on campus! And most exciting, our location at the East Cheyenne campus allows us to better serve a mission-critical and underserved part of our community through these many opportunities and enhanced outreach programs.

This is a true collaboration with our CSN friends whose faculty will be able to participate in our mentorship programs, work with our students, enable CSN students to participate in our many masterclasses and clinics, and much more. This partnership, in addition to the outstanding longtime relationship we enjoy with the UNLV School of Music and Division of Jazz and Commercial Music and other strategic alliances we've built throughout Southern Nevada are key to providing our students a rich cultural, educational, and fulfilling experience, and college opportunities which will carry them through their lifetime.
